Technical Assistance and Training

A photo of Ted Liu standing in front of a group seated at tables in a conference room. To his left is a large screen onto which a slide introducing the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative is projected. To his right is a wooden podium. Against the tan tiled wall behind him is a large, floor-to-ceiling photo of a white wind turbine against a blue sky. To the right of that is a life-size model of a white wind turbine tower.

Ted Liu, director of the Hawai'i Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, shares lessons learned from the Hawai'i Clean Energy Initiative with a group from the U.S. Virgin Islands at a recent workshop held at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Through technical assistance and training, the international partnership for Energy Development in Island Nations (EDIN) promotes the transfer of new renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies into the marketplace.

Technical Assistance

EDIN supports the clean energy initiatives of pilot project participants by helping them:

  • Increase existing clean energy technologies and deploy new ones on a significant scale
  • Improve energy service delivery and energy security among project participants
  • Establish energy baselines and load profiles
  • Conduct renewable resource assessments
  • Characterize their current energy-generation mix
  • Gauge grid reliability constraints and storage requirements
  • Develop comprehensive energy plans
  • Train technical experts
  • Deploy modeling software, geographic information system resource maps, and other tools.

Training

EDIN partners are committed to providing training that helps islands address their unique energy challenges and solutions.

Workshops organized by EDIN partners share real-world experience and lessons learned from those who are providing technical assistance in support of island clean energy initiatives currently under way in places like Hawaii and Alaska. The workshops are designed to give island government and business leaders a practical knowledge base that will assist them in carrying clean energy projects and initiatives forward.
